Getting Around, Grand Canyon Travel, Transport and Car Rental

(Grand Canyon, Arizona - AZ, USA)

The Grand Canyon National Park has good travel transport facilities within the park and links to major centers outside. There is a convenient airport located only minutes from Grand Canyon Village by taxi and two major Interstates pass both the North and South rims. You can also travel to the Grand Canyon by train via the Grand Canyon Railway or by bus via Flagstaff.

Grand Canyon National Park Airport (GCN) / Arriving by Air

Many people opt to fly to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport or McCarran International Airport and drive to the Grand Canyon.

Those who fly to Las Vegas can travel to the Grand Canyon National Park Airport in Tusayan via Air Vegas and Scenic Airlines; both carriers leave from North Las Vegas Airport. Grand Canyon National Park Airport is only 8 miles / 13 km south of the visitor center and taxis travel to the Canyon Rim Visitor Center or Bright Angel Lodge. Highways 64 and 180 feed the park from I-40 and the south entrance. For further information, please refer to the Grand Canyon Airport travel page.

Car Rental

There are major car rental companies situated at Las Vegas and Flagstaff, and driving yourself to the Grand Canyon gives you the freedom to explore the region and get off the beaten track. However, be aware that many roads become impassable during the monsoon rains or after heavy snowfalls, so take heed of Grand Canyon weather reports and ranger advice. Hiring a four-wheel drive for off-road travel is essential in certain areas of the North Rim. Interstate 40 provides access to the South Rim together with highways 64 and 180, while I-15 from Las Vegas runs past the North Rim. Highway 89 runs north from I-40 at Flagstaff through the North Rim and up towards I-15.
